Alexandra's research

Alexandra has a master’s degree in science at Universidad Nacional de Colombia and the last years worked as a leader of mangrove restoration projects at the Marine and Coastal Research Institute of Colombia (Invemar), where she developed more than ten projects related to the topic in Colombia. Among her main research interests is the development of ecological restoration models and techniques for coastal wetlands, monitoring, and metrics for the quantification of restoration success. She also is interested in addressing the human dimension of restoration and the relationships between communities, government, and science for the development of long-term and effective restoration strategies.

In the BCL, Alexandra’s research focuses on improving the decision-making process in mangrove restoration as a way to achieve cost-effective projects and the delivery of multi-stakeholder targets. For that purpose, Alexandra will identify trends in mangrove restoration and the current process to make decisions, existing and emergent multiple stakeholders’ values, views, and needs to set common mangrove restoration objectives. Also, her project will evaluate emerging trade-offs between nature climate solutions and sustainable development goals (SDGs) across blue carbon restoration case studies. Finally, she will develop a model of mangrove restoration prioritization based on a cost-effective analysis of a specific case study.
