Our Citizen Science program went international!
The Blue Carbon Lab travelled to Auckland’s estuaries (Hobson Bay and Bayswater) to study the fast expansion of New Zealand ‘hobbit’ mangroves.
Along NIWA scientists, Dr Carolyn Lundquist and Dr Richard Bulmer, participants collected deep soil cores (> 1m deep) and took diverse mangrove measurements along a 100 m transect line.
Although participants initially struggled with the muddy conditions and dense canopies, they quickly got used to walking in between the mangrove roots without falling.
Journalist from the Sunday Star Times joined us on Dec 6th. They took imagery for the media story “City bankers forego afternoon tea in pursuit of innovative climate change solution” published on 16/12/2018.
